IN 2016 THE FIRST TRADITIONAL CHEESE DAIRY IN THE COUNTY IS BORN

Next year, the first traditional cheese dairy in the county will be born in Mangualde. The new unit will be called Vale da Estrela Dairy and, in a first phase, will create 20 jobs, being a lever for the local economy.

The Mayor of Mangualde, João Azevedo, said in a statement that he was “very pleased that the municipality was chosen for such an undertaking”, stressing that it “is an important investment for the municipality, which will bring employment and wealth to the region’s economy’.

«It is necessary to pay attention to these investments, creating the necessary conditions for them to choose our municipality», emphasizes the mayor.

The mayor adds that “also for producers in the region, this investment represents an added value. It will enrich the milk cycle throughout its process: production, processing and sale».

This new unit, with about 750 square meters, will be used to regularly produce Serra da Estrela PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) cheese.

The unit’s model will include a mezzanine, which allows the cheese making process to be visible from the outside, in order to promote visits by schools and attract tourism.

The investment of around €1,200,000 comes from businessman and former PS minister, Jorge Coelho, from Mangualde.
